Senate File 2435 focuses on keeping Iowa students in school and engaged. Here’s what our families should know:
📚 A student is considered chronically absent if they miss more than 10% of school days in a grading period, about two days each month. Our district must define, address, and support students who struggle with attendance.
✅ All absences, excused and unexcused, are counted toward chronic absenteeism.
🚨 A student is considered truant if they miss 20% or more school days without a valid reason. This could lead to official notifications to parents and even county authorities.
👥 What Happens Next: If a student misses 15% of school days, we’ll arrange a meeting with the student, a parent/guardian, and school officials to find solutions.
If participants fail to comply with the absentee prevention plan, they must be referred to the county attorney for potential civil enforcement.
Let's work together to support success this school year by ensuring students attend school regularly!
